Discover the wonders of the Mekong on this incredible river cruise that takes you through the heart of Southeast Asia. You’ll uncover the highs and lows of Cambodia’s history with visits to Angkor Wat and the Killing Fields before journeying to Vietnam, where you’ll experience the fascinating culture and awe-inspiring landscapes of a country that has made a remarkable recovery from war.

Day 1: Arrive in Siem Reap

Upon arrival in Siem Reap you’ll be greeted at the airport and transferred to your hotel, where you’ll stay for the next three nights.

  • Shinta Mani Shack
Day 2: Siem Reap - Angkor

Today you’ll make your first journey to the Angkor Archaeological Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most popular tourist attraction in Cambodia – to explore the crumbling Ta Prohm temple. Half-consumed by entangled tree roots, this atmospheric ruin featured prominently in the Hollywood blockbuster Tomb Raider. You’ll also visit Opportunities of Development thru Art (ODA), an NGO which provides support and education for underprivileged children. In the evening, you’ll join your fellow travellers for a Welcome Dinner before watching a traditional Aspara dance.

  • Shinta Mani Shack (B,D)
Day 3: Siem Reap - Angkor

Tailor your morning with one of Travelmarvel’s select experiences before returning to Angkor in the afternoon to discover more of its ancient wonders, including the richly-carved Bayon temple. You’ll finish your day by watching the sun go down behind the iconic Angkor Wat.

  • Shinta Mani Shack (B)
Day 4: Siem Reap – Prek K’dam – Board Ship

After transferring to Prek K’dam you’ll board the RV La Marguerite – your home for the next seven nights – and embark on a cruise down the mighty Mekong River. This evening, you’ll have your first onboard dinner before retiring to your suite.

  • RV La Marguerite (B,L,D)
Day 5: Kampong Chhang – Kampong Tralach – Oudong

You’ll start the day with an expedition to the wetlands near Kampong Chhang before advancing on to Kampong Tralach, where you’ll take an ox-cart ride – sometimes termed the ‘Khmer limousine’ – to see how locals live in rural Cambodia. Your day will end in the former royal capital Oudong, where you’ll have the chance to experience a Buddhist blessing.

  • RV La Marguerite (B,L,D)
Day 6: Koh Chen – Phnom Penh

Today you’ll explore the small village of Koh Chen, famed for its copperware handicrafts. Interact with the locals and visit some of their home workshops before reboarding the ship and heading to Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Phen.

  • RV La Marguerite (B,L,D)
Day 7: Phnom Penh

Your day in Phnom Penh begins with a trip to the infamous Killing Fields and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, both of which bore witness to some of the worst atrocities of the 20th century, committed by the brutal Khmer Rouge. In the afternoon you’ll take a guided tour of the magnificent Royal Palace complex, where you’ll see the Silver Pagoda and Emerald Buddha carved from baccarat crystal.

  • RV La Marguerite (B,L,D)
Day 8: Border Crossing – Tan Chau

Spend today on board the ship as you cruise towards the Vietnamese border. In the afternoon, you’ll have the option to attend a fruit-carving demonstration by the ship’s chef as border formalities are carried out and you cross into Vietnam. As you continue on towards the town of Tan Chau, you’ll learn more about the history of Cambodia by watching a documentary about Pol Pot.

  • RV La Marguerite (B,L,D)
Day 9: Tan Chau – Sa Dec

After breakfast, you’ll transfer to a small boat for a trip along the tiny tributaries around Tan Chau, home to villages comprised entirely of stilt houses. Once ashore, you’ll take a tour by rickshaw and discover the artisan workshops that produce the town’s famous silk.

  • RV La Marguerite (B,L,D)
Day 10: Sa Dec – Cai Be

This morning, you’ll take a boat ride to the charming colonial town of Sa Dec where you’ll visit the house of Huynh Thuy Le – once the lover of French writer Marguerite Duras, the namesake of your vessel. After lunch, a local boat will take you to the river-land town of Cai Be, where you can see the French Gothic cathedral before touring a local rice paper manufacturer to learn how this culinary staple is made. This evening you’ll enjoy a final dinner on board the ship.

  • RV La Marguerite (B,L,D)
Day 11: Disembark Ship – Cu Chi Tunnels – Ho Chi Minh City

After disembarking at My Tho Port you’ll travel by coach to the Cu Chi Tunnels, used by Viet Cong guerrillas during the Vietnam War to house troops, transport supplies, and mount surprise attacks. Afterwards, you’ll continue on to Ho Chi Minh City where you’ll have the rest of the afternoon and evening to spend as you please.

  • Fusion Suites Saigon (B,L)
Day 12: Ho Chi Minh City

You’ll spend today exploring Ho Chi Minh City at your leisure. In the evening, you’ll rejoin the group to indulge in a Farewell Dinner at The Chopsticks Saigon.
