Overview

Journey from the Thai border with Laos to the UNESCO World Heritage Site temples of Angkor on a 14 Day Laos & Cambodia Experience. Embark on a Mekong River cruise from the northwest corner of Laos and drift gently via Pak Beng and the Buddha-filled caves of Pak Ou to Luang Prabang. See the early morning alms ceremony of the Luang Prabang monks, visit the Royal Palace, join a traditional cooking class, and swim in the pools below the stunning Kuang Si Waterfalls. Fly to the quiet Cambodian capital of Vientiane, travel through bustling Phnom Penh, and finish your trip in Siem Reap, gateway to the famous Angkor temples. This independent tour is the perfect balance of in-depth exploration, cultural activities, and city stays with plenty of opportunity to sit back and relax. Combine with time in Thailand or a voyage across Vietnam for a complete Southeast Asian adventure.

Day 1

Arrive Chiang Rai

Arrive in Chiang Rai, close to the Laos border in northern Thailand. Meet your guide, transfer to your downtown hotel, and the rest of the day is free. If you have time, visit the white, blue, and black temples of Wat Rong Khun, Wat Rong Suea Ten, and the Baan Dam. Or stay closer to your accommodation and grab a photo at the city’s majestic golden clock tower before wandering the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar.

Day 2:

Chiang Rai – Pak Beng

After an early breakfast, hit the road at 6am and head to the Thailand-Laos border. Your guide will help you with a smooth crossing before transporting you to the banks of the Mekong where your slow boat awaits. Enjoy a floating lunch as you sail gently downstream, stop to visit a local hill tribe village, and continue to your overnight hotel in Pak Beng. Arrive in time to watch the sunset as you freshen up for dinner.

Day 3:

Pak Beng – Pak Ou – Luang Prabang

Wake early and spend time at a local market, or rest a little longer and return to your boat after breakfast. Sail to Ban Baw and learn how traditional rice alcohol is made. Enjoy lunch on the river and pause at the Pak Ou Caves to see thousands of Buddha figures within the limestone cliffs. This afternoon, sit back and relax on a leisurely cruise to Luang Prabang.]

Day 4:

Luang Prabang

Every sunrise, hundreds of Buddhist monks walk the streets of Luang Prabang for Sai Bat, a daily alms-giving ceremony. Observe this sacred spectacle or start the day with a hearty hotel breakfast. Today is for exploring the UNESCO World Heritage city on your doorstep. Visit the Royal Palace, the temples of Wat Mai, Wat Xieng Thong, and the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre. After playing petanque with locals, join a Tamarind Cooking School class and create your own delicious dinner.

Day 5:

Luang Prabang (Kuang Si Waterfalls)

Follow the Mekong River south past the green landscape of rice fields and rolling hills. Pass through local villages and witness life outside the bustling towns. After a short journey, reach the beautiful Kuang Si Waterfalls. Swim in plunge pools or trek through the jungle to the top of the falls and enjoy incredible views along the river. Visit the Bear Rescue Centre before returning to Luang Prabang for an evening at leisure.

Day 6:

Luang Prabang – Vientiane

Enjoy a relaxed morning or squeeze in some extra Luang Prabang sightseeing before transferring to the airport for a flight to Vientiane. You will be collected on arrival and taken to your hotel in the heart of the capital. Tonight is free. Perhaps visit Vientiane Night Market, explore the city nightlife, or simply stroll along the riverfront.

Day 7:

Vientiane

Quiet and laid back, Laos’ capital is one of the world’s easiest to navigate. Visit the understated temple of Wat Si Saket and the golden stupa of Pha That Luang. Discover ancient exhibits and art at the Ho Phrakeo Museum. Climb the Patuxai monument and gaze across the city. Uncover the violent history of Laos at the COPE Visitor Centre, dedicated to victims of landmines and bombings. This evening, enter a local home and observe a traditional Baci ceremony.

Day 8:

Vientiane – Phnom Penh

Swap the capital of Laos for the capital of Cambodia and a completely new experience. Enjoy a short flight with private airport transfers and check-in at your Phnom Penh hotel. Join a guided Cyclo tour around the city from the Belle Époque and Art Deco buildings of the French Quarter to the hilltop Wat Phnom. Your evening is free. Perhaps visit the Phnom Penh Night Market, or grab an Angkor Beer by the roadside and watch the world go by.

Day 9:

Phnom Penh

Spend a full day getting to know Phnom Penh. See the Royal Palace and its famous Silver Pagoda, view artefacts of the Khmer Empire at the National Museum of Cambodia, and browse the wares of the striking Art Deco Central Market. After lunch, discover the dark past of Cambodia when you visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek.

Day 10:

Phnom Penh – Kampong Thom

Head north into the Cambodian Countryside and the pre-Angkorian site of Sambor Prei Kuk. Trek between dozens of temples hidden in the forest and see villagers engaging in traditional crafts. Eat lunch provided by the local community before continuing to your overnight destination of Kampong Thom. Check-in at your riverside hotel and rest ready for tomorrow’s travel.

Day 11:

Kampong Thom – Siem Reap

Today you’ll travel to Siem Reap and the iconic temples of Angkor. Break the journey with a photo opportunity at the cobbled archway bridge of Spean Praptos, constructed by the Khmer in the 12th century. Sail across Tonlé Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, and visit villages raised from the water on stilts. After a packed lunch provided by your hotel and eaten in a local home, continue to your overnight hotel for an evening at leisure.

Day 12:

Siem Reap

Explore Angkor on a full-day Remork Moto tour. Visit the complex of Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world; continue to the fortress city ruins of Angkor Thom, home to the Bayon and its gigantic carved faces; see the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King before taking a lunchtime break. This afternoon, discover the temples of the Grand Circuit and the jungle-shrouded Ta Prohm.

Day 13:

Siem Reap (Banteay Srei)

Travel deeper into the temple-spotted countryside and find the abandoned sandstone ruins of Beng Mealea, now partially reclaimed by nature. Spend time walking and climbing through the temple remains and enjoy your packed lunch in a nearby home. This afternoon, visit the art-filled temple of Banteay Srei and the outlying Banteay Samré before returning for your final evening in Siem Reap.
