Day 1: Los Angeles - San Diego:
This comprehensive tour of the Western USA commences with an early morning departure from the Hacienda Hotel, where we recommend you book a pre-tour night's accommodation. Travel south towards the wonderful southern California city of San Diego, where you enjoy a sightseeing tour and an evening at leisure.
Accommodation: Overnight: Four Points by Sheraton
Day 2: San Diego - Tucson:
Travel close to the Mexican border as you pass into Arizona for a two-night stay in the historic town of Tucson, noted for its giant saguaro cacti and backdrop of craggy mountains. Enjoy a real treat (included) this evening, a traditional Western-style barbecue dinner.
Accommodation: Overnight: Ramada Foothills Tucson
Day 3: Tucson - Tombstone - Tucson:
This morning, visit the historic Mission of San Xavier del Bac, its whitewashed walls contrasting brilliantly with the blue desert sky. Enjoy a walking tour in the former Wild West town of Tombstone, once dubbed the 'Town Too Tough To Die' which offers occasional recreations of Wyatt Earp's famous shoot-out at the OK Corral. Return to Tucson for an evening at leisure.
Day 4: Tucson - Sedona - Grand Canyon:
Travel through the diverse ecosystem of the Sonoran Desert and admire the unique cacti that somehow manage to thrive against the odds in the arid soils. Visit the artists' resort of Sedona, set amidst a striking red-rock landscape, and travel through picturesque Oak Creek Canyon. Arrive at Grand Canyon National Park with time to stop off at assorted lookout points along the South Rim.
Accommodation: Overnight: The Grand Hotel
Day 5: Grand Canyon - Monument Valley - Lake Powell:
Admire the morning light as it throws changing shapes and shadows across the Grand Canyon, then journey through the Navajo Indian Reservation past the historic trading post at Cameron. Tour the iconic landscape of Monument Valley, whose striking red mesas and buttes are instantly familiar from the countless Western movies in which they have starred. Visit the huge Glen Canyon Dam on arrival into Page, whose controversial construction led to the flooding of Glen Canyon, but also the creation of the strikingly beautiful Lake Powell.
Accommodation: Overnight: Courtyard by Marriott
Day 6: Lake Powell - Bryce Canyon:
Travel through the town of Kanab in the Mormon state of Utah for a visit to spectacular Bryce Canyon, where you'll tour through its eroded sandstone pinnacles in multi-coloured hues of yellow, orange and red, and known as 'hoodoos'. This is a visually stunning destination, so have your cameras at the ready!
Accommodation: Overnight: Best Western Ruby's Inn
Days 7 & 8: Bryce Canyon - Zion National Park - Las Vegas:
Travel today to Zion National Park and see its stunning valley lined by dramatic rock formations on either side. By way of contrast, this afternoon you arrive in fabulous, neon-lit Las Vegas, and check-in for a two-night stay. Enjoy a full day at leisure to explore the huge casinos and themed hotels that line the 'Strip' and perhaps take in one of the world-class evening shows by Cirque du Soleil or top-name pop stars and entertainers.
Accommodation: Overnight: Circus Circus
Day 9: Las Vegas - Death Valley - Mammoth Lakes*:
The quiet landscape of Death Valley, which at 282 feet below sea level is the second lowest place on Earth, comes as a refreshing contrast to Las Vegas. Admire the views from Zabriskie Point and Furnace Creek Ranch before heading to the alpine resort of Mammoth Lakes in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Accommodation: Overnight: Mammoth Mountain Inn, * Please note in shoulder season, the closure of the Tioga Pass may make it necessary to overnight in Fresno or Visalia.
Day 10: Mammoth Lakes - Yosemite National Park:
Take the stunning drive across Tioga Pass (except in early and late season, when closed due to snowfall) to arrive in Yosemite National Park. Visit Yosemite Valley to see the glacier-carved granite formations of El Capitan and Half Dome, which rise in sheer fashion from the valley floor.
Accommodation: Overnight: Yosemite Area Hotel (outside park)
Days 11 & 12: Yosemite - San Francisco:
Depart early this morning to make the most of San Francisco with city tour, and then an afternoon and full day at leisure. Ride the cable cars over to Fisherman's Wharf to visit Alcatraz, enjoy shopping around Union Square or visit Haight-Ashbury, the laid-back home of 'Flower Power'.
Accommodation: Overnight: Holiday Inn Golden Gateway
Day 13: San Francisco - Pismo Beach:
Depart from San Francisco for the drive to the Monterey Peninsula, a wealthy enclave of magnificent homes and lovely beaches. Tour colourful Monterey and charming Carmel before heading inland for the drive south. Cut back out to the Pacific Ocean for an overnight stay in the resort of Pismo Beach.
Accommodation: Overnight: Mission Inn
Day 14: Pismo Beach - Los Angeles Departure:
Continue the journey south, stopping for lunch (not included) in the stylish Mediterranean-influenced resort of Santa Barbara. The tour concludes in Los Angeles, but not before a sightseeing tour of Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica.
