Half Day Glacier Walk

Tour FGT – 4.5 hrs

Departing from Fox Glacier, walk beside the river bed to a secret track which zig-zags slowly uphill for 45 minutes through ferns and regenerating temperate rainforest. From its high point, the track winds down to the edge of the ice, where you will be given instep crampons. Follow the ice steps cut by the guides, as they explain the fascinating details of this landscape sculpted by ice. Explore the ice crevasses and ridges, as well as the spectacular views of the icefall and lower glacier. At least an hour is spent on the ice before returning to the bus. Footwear, which includes socks, boots and crampons as well as a waterproof raincoat and overtrousers (if necessary) will be provided. A reasonable level of fitness is required as there is quite a bit of walking involved.
