2 Day Punakaiki Gold On The Tranzalpine

Enjoy the award-winning TranzAlpine train from coast to coast – from Christchurch and the Pacific Ocean to Greymouth and the Tasman Sea. This journey is rated as one of the top scenic train journeys in the world.

From your seat or the open-air viewing carriage you will see the huge and fertile patchwork farmlands of the Canterbury Plains. The TranzAlpine winds its way over five massive viaducts, through 16 tunnels and spectacular gorges, into the stunning Waimakariri River valley and lush beech forests. The train then travels past the beautiful Lake Brunner to the west coast town of Greymouth on the Tasman Sea. You will be amazed at the contrast between the eastern and western sides of the Southern Alps as you pass through the 8.5km Otira Tunnel which takes you under these mighty mountains. On arrival in Greymouth you will be transferred to the Kingsgate Hotel or similar and this afternoon enjoy a guided coach tour to the spectacular Pancake Rocks and Punakaiki blowholes.

After check-out on day two, you will be taken on a short tour to Shantytown – try your hand at gold panning, ride a steam train or explore the displays of old. Return to Greymouth for your return journey to Christchurch.
