2 Day Kaikoura Whale Discovery On The Tranzcoastal

Travel on The TranzCoastal train from quaint Christchurch across the rolling farmland of the North Canterbury plains through Amberley and Cheviot before joining the coast at Oaro.

For over 100 kilometres the train runs along a thin ledge of land pinned between the Pacific Ocean and the rugged Kaikoura Ranges. Arrive at Kaikoura, where you will be transferred to the White Morph Motor Inn or similar and this afternoon enjoy a truly fantastic whale-watching adventure. Viewing the magnificent whales at close range is the highlight, yet on each trip you will encounter a wide range of sealife. You will cruise past colonies of New Zealand fur seals to observe them at close quarters in their natural habitat. In addition you may see the world’s rarest dolphin, the tiny Hector dolphin, while the more common Dusky dolphin can be seen during the summer months. In addition to marine mammals, Kaikoura has a wide variety of offshore birds, including the royal and wandering albatrosses, shearwaters and petrels.

After checking out of your hotel on day two, the morning is at leisure before you are transferred back to the railway station for your afternoon train journey back to Christchurch.
