5 Day Dolphin Coast Self-Drive
5 Day Perth to Perth from £241
Day 1: Perth – Geraldton
Collect your car and drive north along the Brand Highway heading towards Geraldton. Approximately 227km from Perth take the turn off to Cervantes and the Nambung National Park. From Cervantes, it's only a short drive to the world-renowned Pinnacles. Here there are thousands of limestone stalagmite-like formations, measuring up to four metres high. Continue on to Geraldton, dubbed "Sun City" due to its consistently sunny days. It is also referred to as "the crayfish capital of the world" because of its multi-million dollar lobster fishing industry. (424km/265miles)
Accommodation: Standard: Comfort Inn Geraldton (incl. breakfast), Superior: All Seasons Geraldton
Day 2: Geraldton – Monkey Mia
Continue north today on Highway One to Monkey Mia. En-route don't miss a stop at the famous Hamelin Pool, home to ancient Stromatolites, the world’s oldest living creatures! Make sure you have time to stop at the stunning 110km-long Shell Beach. The beach consists of solid shells up to ten metres high in places. From here it’s a short drive to Monkey Mia where your accommodation will be at the Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort for the next two nights. (410km/256miles)
Accommodation: Standard: Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort, (Garden Villa), Superior: Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort, (Beachfront Villa)
Day 3: Monkey Mia
Without doubt the major attraction is the almost daily visit of the dolphins that come in close to shore to be fed by visitors. For almost 40 years now, three generations of bottle-nosed dolphins have been visiting the beach. You can also take a hovercraft ride across Shark Bay to Carnarvon, or just relax on the fantastic beaches. We also recommend a sunset cruise on the Shotover catamaran.
Day 4: Monkey Mia – Kalbarri
Time for a last-minute visit to the amazing dolphins before departing south for Kalbarri, a scenic coastal village on the estuary of the Murchison River. Kalbarri National Park occupies over 186,000 hectares, containing some of the most outstanding scenery, and during the wildflower season (July-October) the area produces a fantastic carpet of over 500 varieties of colourful flowers. The area also offers spectacular fishing, snorkelling and diving, with the reef line being a major attraction. (389km/243miles)
Accommodation: Standard: Kalbarri Palm Resort, Superior: Kalbarri Beach Resort (two bedroom apartments)
Day 5: Kalbarri – Perth
We recommend an early start and suggest travelling inland via Mullewa and Northam to see some typical Australian bush scenery en route to Perth. Mullewa is a small town with a population of under 1,000, but is recognised as the gateway to the Murchison goldfields. Northam, an attractive rural town, is the regional centre for the fertile Avon Valley. Your car is booked until tomorrow and should be returned to the city or airport depots by the same time it was collected on Day 1 to avoid any additional charges. (628km/393miles)
