West Coast Wilderness Railway

Tour WCR – 4.5 hrs

For 67 years, from 1896, steam locomotives hauled copper from Queenstown, through the rugged King River gorge, and down to Strahan. Then, in 1963, the railway closed and returned to nature. For over 30 years it remained closed until a tremendous feat of construction re-opened it.

Today, join the restored West Coast Wilderness Railway to travel through one of the world’s last pristine wilderness areas, dense rainforest, cross 40 bridges and wild rivers and climb over 200m on a fascinating 35km journey from Queenstown to Strahan. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit an old gold mining settlement, explore the mine by candlelight and pan for gold in the river. This is a chance to journey on one of the world's finest train routes.
