Wild Tasmania Self-Drive

6 Days Hobart to Launceston from £292

Day 1: Hobart
After collecting your car, take time to explore. Enjoy the view of Mt Wellington, rising 1270 metres above sea level, forming the dominant backdrop to Hobart. Travel through Battery Point with its rows of historic cottages before reaching Salamanca Place, which boasts magnificent old sandstone warehouses.
Accommodation: Standard: Rydges Hobart, Superior: Somerset on the Pier, One Bedroom Deluxe

Day 2: Hobart – Strahan
Travel from Hobart along the Lyell Highway across the centre of Tasmania to Strahan. The scenery on this drive is quite spectacular as you pass through the World Heritage Franklin Lower Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. Stop at Queenstown, surrounded by the mountains of Mt. Lyell where the local mines produced copper, silver and gold until 1995. A visitor "must" is a cruise into the rugged South West Wilderness on one of the Gordon River Cruise vessels (own expense). (290km/181miles)
Accommodation: Standard: Strahan Village, Superior: Franklin Manor (incl. breakfast)

Day 3: Strahan – Cradle Mountain
Travel north to the small town of Zeehan, named after Abel Tasman’s ship and now a classified historic town. From Zeehan continue to Rosebery and then to Cradle Mountain National Park, in the heart of Tasmania’s Central Highlands. Check in at the Cradle Mountain Lodge for two nights – a wilderness retreat with comfortable cabins, cosy log fires, fine food and wines (breakfast included). (158km/99miles)
Accommodation: Standard: Cradle Mountain Lodge (Pencil Pine Cabin), Superior: Cradle Mountain Lodge (Spa Cabin)

Day 4: Cradle Mountain
Enjoy the tranquillity and remoteness of this unique area and make sure you make time to walk round the spectacular Dove Lake. There is abundant wildlife around the lodge, including Tasmanian devils, possums and platypuses.

Day 5: Cradle Mountain – Launceston
The most direct and scenic route to Launceston is through the small town of Sheffield. Sheffield sits in the foothills of Mount Roland in one of the most attractive areas on the island. Continue on to Deloraine and finally to Launceston. (142km/89miles)
Accommodation: Standard: Colonial on Elizabeth, Superior: Peppers Seaport

Day 6: Launceston
Drop your hire car off today at either the city or airport depots. The car must be returned by the same time as it was picked up on Day 1 to avoid additional charges.
