Colombo to Colombo

Highlights include:
• The ancient capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa
• Leopard spotting in Yala National Park
• The temperate hill country cities of Nuwara Eliya and Kandy
• Pinnawala elephant orphanage

Day 1: Colombo – Sigiriya/Kandalama:
You will be met on arrival at Colombo International Airport and transferred to your chosen hotel in Sigiriya or Kandalama by your chauffeur/guide. He will stay with you throughout the 8 days of your tour. (D)

Day 2: Anuradhapura & Dambulla:
This morning’s excursion is to Anuradhapura, the first capital and undoubtedly the grandest city of ancient Sri Lanka. Here you will visit Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred tree over 2200 years old, the ruins of Brazen Palace, once a magnificent monastery and Ruwanweliseya – the most famous Dagoba (2nd century BC). You will also see 'Samadhi' Buddha, the Isurumuniya Rock Temple and the Kuttam Pokuna Twin Ponds. After lunch, visit the Dambulla Rock Temple, the most impressive of Sri Lanka’s cave temples with the largest area of wall paintings in the world. Dambulla is a World Heritage Site and the cave contains over 150 images of Buddha, the largest of which spans 14 metres. (BD)

Day 3: Sigiriya & Polonnaruwa:
After breakfast, climb up the 5th century Sigiriya Rock Fortress – ‘The Lion Rock’ – to view the old moat, rampart and water gardens, and visit the world-renowned frescoes of the ‘Heavenly Maidens' of Sigiriya. This afternoon, visit Sri Lanka’s second capital, Polonnaruwa, with ruins dating back to the 11th century. View the Gal Vihara, the four splendid rock-carved statues of Buddha and the remains of a former Temple of the Tooth Relic. (BD)

Day 4: Sigiriya/Kandalama – Pinnawala – Kandy:
This morning, visit the elephant orphanage in Pinnawala where you may see the elephants being fed and bathed. On arrival in Kandy, enjoy a city tour of this magical place, visiting the bazaar and Kandy Lake. This evening visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic and enjoy a cultural show of traditional Sri Lankan dancing. (BD)

Day 5: Kandy – Peradeniya – Nuwara Eliya:
Visit the extensive Peradeniya Botanical Gardens and continue on to Nuwara Eliya in the heart of the hill country. Stop en route at a tea factory to witness the manufacturing process of tea. (BD)
Accommodation: Standard: Galway Forest Lodge (or similar), Superior: Hotel Tea Factory (or similar).

Day 6: Nuwara Eliya – Yala National Park:
After breakfast, your journey from Nuwara Eliya via Rawana Ella waterfalls will take approximately four hours until you arrive at Yala National Park. This game park has one of the highest densities of leopards in the world. You may also spot elephants, crocodiles, sloth bears and mongoose during your game drive. (BD)

Day 7: Yala – Galle – Colombo:
On arrival in Galle, visit the sites of this once busy port including the extensive Galle Fort. Depart for Colombo and, on arrival, the rest of the day is at leisure. (BD)

Day 8: Depart Colombo:
After breakfast, you will be transferred either to the airport for your ongoing flight or to your chosen beach hotel. The transfer to your beach hotel is not included in the cost of the tour. (B)
