Colombo to Colombo
Highlights include:
• Amazing 5th Century Rock Fortress at Sigiriya featuring the world-renowned ‘Heavenly Maidens’ frescos
• Dambulla Rock Temple and Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy
• The ancient city of Polonnaruwa
Departures:
Daily on a private basis.
Day 1: Arrive Sigiriya/Kandalama:
You will be met on arrival at Colombo International Airport and transferred to your chosen hotel in Sigiriya or Kandalama. This journey will take approximately four hours but you will drive though some spectacular and beautiful scenery. We particularly recommend the Superior option as Kandalama Hotel is perched in a unique setting with truly superb views of the surrounding tank (reservoir). (D)
Accommodation: Standard: Sigiriya Hotel (or similar), Superior: Kandalama (or similar).
Day 2: Sigiriya & Polonnaruwa:
After breakfast, begin this morning with a climb up the 5th Century Sigiriya Rock fortress, ‘The Lion Rock', which takes the form of a citadel rising from the jungle. This was once the stronghold of a fortified town. Today you can view the old moat, rampart and water gardens with exceptional views of the surrounding countryside at the top. Visit the world-renowned frescoes of the ‘Heavenly Maidens' of Sigiriya, which are sheltered in a pocket of rock approached by a spiral staircase. This afternoon, visit the second capital city of Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa, a World Heritage Site with ruins dating back to the 11th century. View the Gal Viharaya – the four splendid statues of Buddha that are carved out of rock and the remains of a former Temple of the Tooth Relic. Return back to your hotel in Sigiriya. (BD)
Day 3: Dambulla & Kandy:
After breakfast, visit the Dambulla Rock Temple, the most impressive of Sri Lanka’s cave temples with the largest area of wall paintings in the world. Dambulla is a World Heritage Site and the cave contains over 150 images of Buddha of which the largest is the colossal figure of Buddha carved out of rock and spanning 14 metres. In the afternoon, journey to Kandy, the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and also a World Heritage Site. Many of Kandy’s legends, traditions and folklore are still lovingly kept alive. Drive around Kandy Lake and visit the Bazaar and gem museum amongst many of Kandy’s other sites before continuing on to your hotel for a well-deserved rest. (BD)
Accommodation: Standard: Hotel Hilltop, Kandy (or similar), Superior: Earl’s Regency Hotel, Kandy (or similar)
Day 4: Kandy – Peradeniya – Colombo:
After breakfast at your hotel, visit the extensive Peradeniya Botanical Gardens originally built by a Sinhala King. Proceed from Kandy to the famous elephant orphanage in Pinnawala. The orphanage is home to about 60 elephants that have been found abandoned or orphaned in the wild. The best time to visit is during feeding time as many baby elephants are bottle-fed. Finally, continue your journey back to Colombo and the airport for your onward flight. Alternatively, transfer directly to your beach hotel (at additional cost. Please call us for exact prices). (B)
Prices Include:
• Accommodation and meals as specified (B=breakfast, D=dinner).
• Private transport and sightseeing as detailed.
• Return transfers from Colombo. Transfers to and from your chosen beach hotel are available at additional cost. Please call for a price.
