Self Drive Touring in Malaysia

Self Drive is an excellent way to explore the diverse country of Malaysia, giving you the opportunity to step off the beaten track and discover your own paradise. The roads are good with major Highways linking the main cities, traffic is light, driving on the left-hand side and international traffic signs used. Our suggested itinerary allows you to explore all the major highlights of Malaysia, including the unspoilt East Coast beaches and the cooler Cameron Highlands.

Day 1: Kuala Lumpur – Cameron Highlands
This morning pick-up your car or receive delivery at your chosen KL hotel and depart on the 205km journey to Cameron Highlands. Follow the North-South Highway and stop off en-route to see the Hindu Temple enclosed within Batu Caves. Leave the highway at the Tapah exit and travel the additional 65km to Cameron Highlands via scenic roads and stopping off to explore local sights such as waterfalls. You should expect to arrive at your chosen hotel late afternoon.

Day 2: Cameron Highlands – Penang
The 295km drive to Penang can either by done in just one day or you can stop overnight in Ipoh at approximately the half way point. Again the main route will be on the North-South Highway which is well sign posted, minimising the chance of an accidental detour. Penang is connected to the main land by road bridge so continue your drive over and arrive at your chosen beach or Georgetown hotel.

Day 3: Penang
Today explore Penang including Georgetown, the islands cultural centre, some of the many beaches including the quieter coves and the local Malay villages. You may decide to finish your self-drive here and continue your holiday in Penang where you can book a return flight to KL.

Day 4: Penang – Kota Bharu
Today depart Penang and join the East West Highway to Kota Bharu. This is the longest days drive in the itinerary (386km) yet very rewarding with the route cutting through Mountain passes and with stunning scenes along the way. You should expect to arrive at your hotel early evening where you can freshen up and head in to town to sample the local cuisine.

Day 5: Kota Bharu – Kuala Terrengganu
This morning gives you the opportunity to explore Kota Bharu further with the opportunity for some shopping. Then depart for Kuala Terrengganu stopping en-route in Marang. From Terranganu you may decide to drop off the car and continue your holiday on the east coast islands of Redang (see page 58) or continue on to Kuantan.

Day 6: Kuantan – Kuala Lumpur
A single 259km drive south today following the East-West Highway. The Elephant Sanctuary en-route is well worth the visit and breaks up the journey nicely. This afternoon drop off your car or it can be picked up for you from a specified destination.
