The Yangtze Gorge is recognised as one of the most unique and spectacular areas of China and, despite the damming of the gorge, the scenery is still breathtaking. This escorted tour combines the major highlights of China - Beijing, Shanghai, Xian and Guilin - with a three-day Yangtze cruise. Tours with seven passengers or more are accompanied by a Western tour leader in addition to a local English-speaking guide. This tour will never run with more than its maximum of fifteen people.

Upon arrival in Beijing you will be met and transferred to your hotel for a 4-night stay.

Day 2: Beijing:
This morning walk through infamous Tian’anmen Square and on to the splendid Forbidden City. View the concubine's quarters, Emperor's chambers and the numerous decorative halls. After lunch, take a stroll through the Hutong’s – the fascinating old laneways of Beijing around the Drum Tower. (BL)
Day 3: Great Wall:
After breakfast, drive to Mutianyu, 90km northeast of Beijing, to visit one of the best-preserved sections of the Great Wall (Wan Li Changcheng). The construction dates back over 2,000 years. Return to Beijing mid-afternoon. (B)
Day 4: Beijing - Xian:
An early morning tour inside the sacred and architecturally unique Temple of Heaven that has come to symbolise Beijing. See the locals practising Tai Chi and calligraphy, playing chess and performing on musical instruments in the surrounding park. Continue on to the magnificent grounds of the Summer Palace to view the Long Corridor, graceful 17 Arch Bridge on South Lake and the temples and pavilions of Longevity Hill before catching your overnight train to Xian in a comfortable 1st-class soft sleeper (approx 14 hours). Enjoy a tour of this culturally diverse and exotic Chinese city. Visit the old city walls, which stretch for 12km and date back to the 14th-Century, before continuing on to the Great Mosque. Explore the surrounding atmospheric Muslim Quarter with its narrow streets and small markets selling snacks and souvenirs before a final stop at Big Goose Pagoda.

Day 6: Xian & Terracotta Warriors:
Today, take a short drive east to the truly remarkable Terracotta Warriors. Buried for over 2,000 years, this vast army was created to protect the Qin Emperor in the afterlife. There is an excellent museum on the same site and a chance to see a video presentation. (B)
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Guilin. On arrival visit Fubo Hill, the Traditional Chinese Medicine Institute and enjoy a relaxing reflexology foot massage.

Day 8: Guilin – Longsheng – Guilin:
Enjoy a day trip to explore an ethnic minority Yao village and to admire some of China's most spectacular rural scenery around Longsheng. This includes the amazing Dragon's Backbone rice terraces, which cling precariously to the slopes of a string of 800-metre peaks. (B)
Day 9: Guilin (Li River Cruise) – Yangshuo:
Enjoy a delightful cruise along the Li River to view the stunning limestone karsts that tower above the river. Lunch is served on board the boat before you arrive at the attractive town of Yangshuo. (B)

Day 10: Yangshuo:
Today you are free to enjoy the small town of Yangshuo. Venture into the countryside to explore the surrounding rice paddies, river ways and limestone peaks. (B)
Day 11: Yangshuo – Chongqing – Yangtze Cruise:
Spend the morning relaxing in Yangshou and sampling some of the many cafes before flying to Chongqing – gateway to the gorges of the Yangtze – to board your boat for 3 nights on the river. (B)

Days 12 & 13: Yangtze Cruise:
Admire the magnificent river landscapes for which this stretch of the Yangtze is famed, before a side trip to the smaller gorges. (BLD)
Finish the cruise with a visit to the enormous Three Gorges Dam project site, before transferring to Yichang Airport for a flight to Shanghai.

Day 15: Shanghai:
Enjoy a walking tour along the historical riverfront area, known as the Bund, set on the banks of the Huang Pau River, which separates old Shanghai from the new area of Pudong. Stroll down buzzing Nanjing Road with views of the Pearl TV Tower. Visit the Old Chinese Quarter to wander through the Yu Yuan Garden and Bazaar. (B)
Day 16: Shanghai – Zhujiajiao – Shanghai:
Enjoy a day tour to the town of Zhujiajiao, exploring the narrow streets and taking a leisurely canal cruise, before enjoying some free time later this afternoon back in Shanghai. (B)
Day 17: Shanghai:
Enjoy a walking tour of the old backstreets and the quaint markets and shops of the French Concession. This evening, enjoy a farewell dinner together (own expense) after a memorable journey through a remarkable country. (B)
Day 18: Depart Shanghai:
Today you will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight. (B)
