From the tiny fishing villages and lush farms on the spectacular Li River near Yangshuo and the quaint, graceful canals and streets of Zhujiajiao, to the overwhelming might of Beijing and the 21st-century pace of Shanghai, the contrasts of China are revealed on this exciting journey.

Day 1 : Arrive Beijing
Upon arrival in Beijing you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Tonight meet your tour leader (or local guide) and the rest of the group for welcome drinks.

Day 2: Tiananmen Square - Forbidden City - 'Hutongs'
This morning walk through Tian’anmen Square and continue on foot to explore the splendid Forbidden City. After lunch, hop onto a rickshaw and head into one of Beijing’s few remaining ‘hutongs’ – traditional lanes in the backstreets of the city. (B)
Day 3: The Great Wall
This morning travel to Mutianyu (90 kilometres north-east of Beijing) to visit China’s most famous attraction – the Great Wall of China. In the evening head to the theatre to view the world famous Chinese acrobats in a mind-boggling performance of skill and agility. (B)
Day 4: Temple of Heaven - Chinese Ink and Water Painting Class
Today visit the Temple of Heaven, located within a park frequented by elderly men practising Chinese calligraphy and performers reciting Beijing opera. Proceed to a hands-on Chinese ink and water painting class. Discover skills you never knew you had! (B)
Day 5: Summer Palace - Beijing - Xian
Today spend some time exploring and experiencing more of Beijing’s local streets on foot, followed by a visit to the Summer Palace. Take a cruise on Kunming Lake and wander through the extensive grounds of the Palace. In the afternoon transfer to Beijing West Railway Station to board your 1st-class sleeper train for Xian. (B)

Day 6: Xian city tour
Upon arrival in Xian you will be transferred to your hotel. After breakfast visit the Old Ming City Walls (dating back to the 14th-century), before continuing on to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. In the afternoon explore the Great Mosque at the heart of the Muslim Quarter and enjoy its lively street markets and fascinating local foods. (B)

Day 7: Terracotta Warriors - Guilin
Start today with a short drive east to the truly remarkable Terracotta Warriors. Still under excavation, the thousands of life-sized terracotta warriors and horses were only unearthed in 1974. Return to Xian mid-afternoon for your flight to Guilin.

Day 8: Longsheng - Dragon's Backbone
After breakfast head out from Guilin to Longsheng. Drive past the spectacular scenery of towering karst cliffs and wander through the maze of little stone pathways and traditional wooden houses on stilts of a typical White Yao village. Enjoy a short hike further up the mountain to admire the Dragon’s Backbone - row upon row of rice terraces clinging precariously to the slopes. (B)
Day 9: Li River Cruise - Yangshuo
This morning board your boat for a wonderful journey along the Li River to Yangshuo, a small town set amid lush, green rice paddies. Spend the afternoon walking the cobblestone streets, relax in a street side cafe, and enjoy the colourful atmosphere of this enchanting town. (B)

Day 10: Yangshuo
Enjoy a leaisurely day in this beautiful town surrounded by charming scenery. Take a cycling trip down the picturesque countryside lanes, followed by free time in the afternoon. (B,L)
Day 11: Yangshuo - Guilin - Shanghai
Partake in an early Tai Chi lesson before heading to Guilin for your onward flight to Shanghai. On arrival in Shanghai transfer to your hotel and the rest of your day is free to explore this exciting city. (B)

Day 12: The Bund - Yu Garden - Shanghai Museum
Today your city tour will take you to the historical riverfront area known as the Bund, the Old Chinese Quarter and the Yu Garden. You might like to savour the famous local dumplings in the bustling market area before going on to visit the Shanghai Museum. (B)
Day 13: Shanghai - Zhujiajiao - Shanghai
This morning head to nearby Zhujiajiao, a traditional water canal town dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. Visit the Yuanjin Monastery and Taoist Temple, the great Qing Post Office and the old Chinese Pharmacy before your peaceful canal cruise. (B)
Day 14: French Consession – Chinese Quarter - walking tour
This morning explore the historic colonial streets of the former French Concession and Chinese Quarter to learn more about traditional Shanghai Shikumen architecture. Explore the old city backstreets on a walking tour before a visit to the Children's Palace and a calligraphy lesson. Join your group in the evening for a farewell dinner. (B)
Day 15: Depart Shanghai
Your tour ends today with a transfer to the airport, for a continuation of your travels. (B)
