The Mighty Yangtze

Beijing (4 nights), Xian (2 nights), Yangtze River Cruise (3 nights), Shanghai (2 nights), Suzhou (1 night).
This is an exciting and comprehensive tour encapsulating many of China’s key attractions, including a memorable cruise down the mighty Yangtze River. Your starting point is the busy capital Beijing, before a visit to the incredible Terracotta Warriors in Xian. After your leisurely three night cruise, continue on to the bustling metropolis of Shanghai and the neighbouring attractive water towns of Suzhou and Tongli.
Highlights include:

• Spend time wandering round the magnificent Forbidden City
• Walk along the Great Wall of China
• Visit the incredible Terracotta Warriors just outside Xian
• Enjoy a memorable cruise down the mighty Yangtze River through the Three Gorges

• Stroll through Suzhou’s famous gardens and visit the silk factory
Departures:
Wednesdays or Thursdays (arrive Beijing) between 24Mar07-04Nov07 (no winter sailings on the Yangtze). Departing on a different day will requiring sailing with a different cruise company but is certainly possible. Please ask for details.
Day 1: Arrive Beijing:
On arrival transfer to your chosen hotel for 4 nights and enjoy the rest of your day at leisure.

Day 2: Tian’anmen Square, Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven:
A full days sightseeing starting in central Beijing at Tian’anmen Square and the incredible Forbidden City which was the heart of the empire for over 500 years. After lunch at a local restaurant continue on to the Temple of Heaven, one of China’s best examples of Ming architecture originally built in 1420. (B,L)
Day 3: The Great Wall and Summer Palace:
An early start for the drive out to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, 90 kilometres north west of Beijing. The Mutianyu section dates from the Ming Dynasty and is less commercial than some sections closer to Beijing. After lunch visit the Summer Palace and the extensive grounds filled with temples, lakes, pavilions and gardens. (B,L)
Day 4: Beihei Park - Hutong Tour and Lama Temple:
After breakfast visit Beihei Park before exploring Beijing’s fascinating maze of narrow lanes and ancient courtyard houses known as the 'Hutong'. In the afternoon visit the oldest Buddhist temple in Beijing – Yonghegong Lama Temple followed by a stop at ‘Silk Alley’. In the evening perhaps enjoy one of Beijing’s most famous delicacies – Peking Duckr. (B,L)
Day 5: Beijing - Xian:
Depart Beijing for your flight to Xian. On arrival visit the impressive Old City Walls (dating back to the 14th-century) and the Provincial History Museum. In the evening you may wish to attend a Tang Dynasty dinner show (at own expense). (B,L)

Day 6: Terracotta Warriors, Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Muslim Quarter:
Spend the morning visiting the spectacular Army of Terracotta Warriors. After a local lunch return to Xian to spend the afternoon exploring Big Wild Goose Pagoda built in AD 652, the atmospheric Muslim Quarter and its centre-piece the Grand Mosque. (B,L)
Day 7: Xian – Chongqing:
After breakfast depart for the airport for your flight to Chongqing. Spend the afternoon visiting the ancient town of Ciqikou perched on a hill to the west of the city. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, perhaps try the spicy hotpot which is Chongqing’s most famous dish. Board your Yangtze cruiser which departs at approx 10pm. (B,L)

Day 8: Yangtze Cruise:
By now you will have settled into your comfortable cabin on board one of President's excellent five star ships. Enjoy a shore excursion to Fengdu or the Abode of Ghosts - numerous temples containing sculptures of devils and demons. Continue down the Yangtze until you pass through the stunning Qu Tang Gorge just before dinner. (B,L,D)
Day 9: Yangtze Cruise:
Pass through Wu Gorge and on to a shore excursion at Shennong Stream, a tributary of the Yangtze. Proceed to Three Gorges shiplock which takes approximately three hours to pass through. Although water levels have risen, the Three Gorges are still a spectacular sight, its sheer cliffs rising to a height of 1200 metres. (B,L,D)
Day 10: Yichang – Shanghai:
Take an interesting shore excursion to the huge Three Dam Gorges site which has paradoxically, now become one of the highlights of the trip. Just before you dock, pass through Xiling Gorge, a stretch of rapids and once the most dangerous part of river. After docking you will be transferred to Yichang airport for your flight to Shanghai. Day 11: Shanghai sightseeing:
Your full day tour of Shanghai includes the Jade Buddha Temple, Yu Yuan Gardens, the delightful Old Town and a dim sum lunch at a local teahouse. In the evening you may wish to catch an acrobatic show (own expense), stroll along the Bund admiring the view across to Pudong or visit the atmospheric French Concession dotted with exciting bars and restaurants. Day 12: Shanghai – Suzhou:
Transfer to Shanghai railway station for your journey to Suzhou. On arrival you will be met and guided around some of Suzhou’s most famous gardens – the small but beautiful Garden of the Masters of Nets and the Humble Administrators Garden. In the afternoon visit Tiger Hill and the silk factory. (B)

Day 13: Suzhou - depart Shanghai:
Depart for Shanghai's airport and your onward flight. (B)
