South Africa self drive

Cape Town and the Garden Route form the quintessential South African self-drive. The captivating scenery and Cape Dutch architecture of the numerous vineyards never fail to enchant those who visit. A gourmand’s paradise, the delicious South African cuisine and crisp Stellenbosch Sauvignons taste all the better when you retire each evening to a luxurious property full of character and unique African charm.

Days 1 - 4: Cape Town
Your private driver guide will introduce you to the highlights of Cape Town before escorting you down to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, the meeting point of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Table Mountain, Camps Bay, the Waterfront and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens can all be explored at your leisure from your base at the iconic Mount Nelson Hotel where you will spend your first three nights.

Days 4 - 6: Cape Town – Winelands
Pick up your Avis hire car and journey through verdant scenery to the heart of the winelands and the historic hamlet of Franschhoek. Spend the next two nights at La Couronne, a delightful boutique hotel where each of the 24 bedrooms is distinctively decorated. You are staying next to the gardens of the Mont Rochelle Mountain Vineyard, one of Franschhoek’s oldest wineries. Food and wine are the hotel’s passions and where better to taste their excellent Chardonnay or Merlot than next to where the grape is grown?

Days 6 - 8: Winelands – Hermanus – George
Head south to the small fishing town of Hermanus and the clifftop Birkenhead House. This remarkable hotel has been designed and decorated to reflect its coastal setting, showcasing European antiques and a superb infinity-edge pool, the ideal vantage point for the Southern Right Whales that the town is famous for. The following morning set off along the picturesque Garden Route, taking your time to admire the stunning scenery before breaking your journey at George. Overnight at Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate – perfect for golfers and non-golfers alike.

Days 8 - 10: George – Plettenberg Bay – Port Elizabeth
Continue along the Garden Route, perhaps stopping to sample some succulent Knysna oysters for lunch before arriving at Plettenberg Park, your glamorous accommodation for the next two nights. Inventive architecture enhances its unparalleled clifftop setting, as do the lavish furnishings, handsome sleigh beds and indigenous touches. Dine on the sea-deck by lantern light or around the pool and enjoy sumptuous fresh cuisine and an incredible selection of wine. Unfortunately the day comes when you must make your way to Port Elizabeth for your onward journey, returning with many fond memories and a much-expanded waistline.
