Stretching some 350km from north to south, Kruger National Park is larger than Wales. And with its breathtaking wildlife and crackling campfires it is for many the highlight of a trip to South Africa.
It is possible to explore the park in the comfort of your own car but we recommend an organised safari as your guide will show you the best places to spot everything from the biggest lions to the most delicate flowers.
The accommodation options for your safari are endless and you can choose to stay at basic campsites or luxurious 5* tented cabins.
Outside Kruger the beautiful Panorama Route is an undiscovered area of natural beauty, with places like God's Window, Blyde River Canyon and quaint Pilgrims Rest ensuring you have an African adventure like no other.

Flights into Kruger
Kruger National Park is served by two airports, both situated just outside its boundaries. Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) serves the southern part of Kruger National Park, including the Sabi Sand Game Reserve (Idube, Lion Sands, Exeter & Kirkman’s Camp) and Jock Safari Lodge. Hoedspruit Airport serves the northern part of Kruger National Park, including Thornybush, Motswari & Makalali Game Reserves. Both airports are served with regular scheduled connections from Johannesburg (one way from approx. £46 per person), and KMIA also has direct flights from Cape Town (one way from approx. £60 per person).
Transfers
Onward transfers from both KMIA and Hoedspruit airports is normally by road, see individual lodge descriptions for details and prices. Some of the private game reserves also offer scheduled or charter flights by light aircraft directly into their lodges - again, please see individual lodge descriptions for details and prices.
Self-Drive
Kruger National Park is approximately 5.5 - 7 hours drive from Johannesburg, depending on the location of your chosen lodge. We would like to recommend breaking the journey with a stay at one of our featured hotels along the 'Panorama Route' (see opposite page). Car rental is available with Avis at both KMIA and Hoedspruit airports, from approx. £21 per car, per day.
Access into Kruger National Park
The Kruger National Park may be accessed with your own rental car via one of the gates dotted along the park's boundary. These gates open at sunrise and close at sunset, and a daily conservation fee of approximately R120 per adult and R60 per child is payable locally.
